MDeC Smart School Department is now involved in on-going activities to formulate strategic recommendations for the roll-out of the Smart School and develop concrete action plans for the future of the Smart School. Amongst the programs and activities are as follows:

The Launching of Smart School Qualification Standards (SSQS)
The SSQS was launched on 24th April, 2007 by H.E Minister of Education, Malaysia. This is a collaborative effort between MDeC and Ministry of Education, Malaysia. MSC Malaysia has set the standards for smart school worldwide with the launch of Smart School Qualification Standards (SSQS) in April 2007.

The SSQS is the first set of standards introduced:

  • To measure ICT utilization and to provide indicators for a smart school

  • Increased ICT utilization and benefits reached users.

  • To serve as a monitoring tool to gage schools progress in terms of ICT utilization.
The Smart School International Conference Malaysia 2007
The Smart School International Conference Malaysia 2007 was the first of its kind in the region. Emphasis was placed on results and outcomes of ICT utilization, while people and community will be the focal point as the means to achieve these desired results. This conference endeavours to be a learner-oriented experience, leveraging on and capturing practitioners' actual first hand involvement.

The objectives of the Conference were as follows:

  • To share knowledge and experience on the implementation of the Smart School.

  • To identify/share best practices for the Smart School programme.

  • To derive lessons learnt from initiatives around the globe.

  • To promote the Smart School Flagship Application locally and international.
Outbound Smart School Pursuit Visit to Vietnam and Cambodia
The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) through the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) has extended its assistance in developing competencies in the global knowledge-based economy for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) countries. The activities focused on the Smart School Project. This initiative is in line with the "Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI)" instituted at the fourth unofficial ASEAN Summit in Singapore in 2000.

The recent mission's broad objectives were:

  • To initiate the Phase 2 of the Smart School project in Vietnam and the Kingdom of Cambodia through a G-to-G arrangement.

  • To identify schools for the implementation of the Smart School project.

  • To evaluate the costing for implementation for both countries.

  • To gain support from the Government of Vietnam and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Outbound: COMIT Qatar Education Showcase 2006 and Smart School Pursuit Visit
Inline with the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) OIC Market Strategy, the Smart School Department has identified Qatar as one of our target markets for 2006. Leveraging our participation in the COMIT Qatar and Qatar Education Showcase 2006, MDeC has had the opportunity of engaging various agencies for potential areas of collaboration in various areas of ICT.

The recent mission's broad objectives were:

  • To initiate the elevation of the existing Smart School project in Qatar to a G-to-G level and to expand to more schools.

  • To lead the smart school exhibition at the COMIT Qatar and Qatar Education Showcase 2006.

  • To share the Malaysian experience in the implementation of the development of applications for the Malaysian Smart School

  • To follow-up on the invitations that the MDeC had sent to the Supreme ICT Council (SIC) and Supreme Education Council (SED) to organize a visit to Malaysia to have a first-hand look at the smart school implementation in Malaysia.

  • To discuss the possibility of a pilot in selected schools.
Use of Refurbished PCs Pilot Project
A pilot project on the use of refurbished PCs was implemented over a three month period at two pilot sites, a primary school and a secondary school namely, SK Bukit Rimau, Shah Alam and SMK Sungai Kapar Indah, Klang. The project was a collaboration between the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Ministry of Education (MoE) which was been successfully completed in November 2005.

The broad objectives for the project include enabling learning within and after school hours; enabling self-accessed, self-directed and self-paced learning efficiently; and reducing the cost of hardware for the "Pembestarian" of 10,000 schools.

Subsequent to the Refurbished PCs Pilot Project, MDeC has considered assisting the school in furnishing the school lab with 20 refurbished PCs. To acknowledge MDeC's support to the school, the event "Majlis Pelaksanaan Makmal Bestari MSC" on 25 March 2006 was held at SK Bukit Rimau. The event was co-launched by YBhg. Dr. Muhammad Ghazie bin Ismail, Senior Vice President of MDeC and YB Datuk Amzah bin Haji Umar, Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Kawasan Seri Muda. Five hundred guests including the MoE Officials, members of the Parent Teacher Association, relevant industry players and students were among the invites.

Smart School Roadmap 2005-2020
"Smart School Roadmap 2005-2020: An Educational Odyssey" workshop was held on the 12 - 14 April, 2005 with the participation of Ministry of Education, key agencies such as MAMPU, MOSTI, MIMOS and MEWC and industry. The broad objectives of the workshop were:

  • To develop a Smart School Roadmap 2005-2020, serving as a framework for a long term action and programmes for Smart School in Malaysia.

  • To review the past, explore the present and create an ideal future scenario for the Smart School.

  • To gather input from decision makers, the industry and educationists on the past, present and future of the Smart School.

  • To create a desired future together based on values, purposes, and projects held in common and to start working toward it right away.
Advancing E-education: New Thinking - Sharing New Zealand & Malaysian Experiences
A seminar on "Advancing E-education: New Thinking - Sharing New Zealand & Malaysian Experiences" was held by MDeC in collaboration with New Zealand Trade Enterprise (NZTE) on 28 - 29 June 2005 at Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The seminar aimed:

  • To create a platform for the government and private sectors representatives of both countries to establish a network and share their knowledge and expertise in the e-education industry.

  • To benchmark the Smart School Flagship against similar initiatives in New Zealand.

The Malaysian participants comprised Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, MAMPU, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and Ministry of Energy, Water and Communication and key industry players related to the e-Education sector.

The New Zealand delegation was made up of key officials from the Ministry of Education as well as the private sector that have expertise in developing and implementing government-led e-Education initiatives. These representatives have played a significant part in the implementation of New Zealand's ICT strategy in schools and tertiary institutions over the last 7 to 8 years.

Impact Assessment Study on Smart School Integrated Solution (SSIS) and Other ICT Initiatives by the Ministry of Education
The Impact Assessment Study aims to assess the impact of the implementation of the SSIS and other ICT initiatives on students, teachers and schools administrators.
MSC Malaysia ICT Fair 2005
Smart School Department also participated in the MSC Malaysia ICT Fair 2005 in conjunction with the 9th International Advisory Panel (IAP) Meeting that was held from 7th to 10th Sept 2005 at Kepala Batas, Penang.

The Smart School Department coordinated several activities at the Smart School Pavilion (Mock Classroom) such as teacher training, drawing contest "Vision on Smart School", mock classroom activities and scheduled visits.

The Smart School Pavilion drew a total number of 12,223 visitors.
