| Repositioning of the Smart School |

11 years has since passed since the inauguration of the 88 pilot smart schools . As the implementation of this project progressed, it has gathered commendable momentum and speed. Nonetheless, the smooth ride was curtailed by a few humps and bumps along the way, which rendered the speed of progress less desirable in the view of a dynamic establishment such as MDeC. Among the gravest hitch was the lack of policies to govern and empower the processes and progress as set out in the CRFP (1997) and the Smart School Conceptual Blueprint (1997).
Hence in the endeavour to ensure that these 88 smart schools could successfully serve as models for the 10,000 schools within the nation as well as form an international point of reference, MDeC has once again joined forces with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to proactively formulate strategic policies which at large is critically required in this new phase of repositioning of the pilot schools. These comprehensive strategic policies cover human capital, champions, hardware, network, standards, assessment and incentives.
To this end, a series of workshops to formulate the strategic policies were planned involving various MoE divisions, namely the Workshops on Discussion of the Policy Paper on Repositioning of the 88 Smart Schools. Two workshops have been held thus far, the first being on 4th May 2007 at the Equatorial, Bangi. This was followed by a second two day workshop held on 24th -25th May 2007, at the Pan Pacific, KLIA.
A final workshop will be held in August, to wrap up the formulation of these policies .
Central to these workshops was the formulation of policies which will ensure the sustainability, competitiveness and uniqueness of the Smart School flagship against similar initiatives.
In spite of all these challenges, being a dynamic and proactive organisation, MDeC has already begun the first steps in molding these 88 pilot schools into a benchmark for the transformation of the entire nation's schools into smartschools by 2010. A set of standards which are locally developed, but globally positioned, namely the Smart School Qualification Standards (SSQS), have been diligently and meticulously formulated and ready for application. Launched on 24th April 2007, the SSQS, awards schools with star rating which allows schools to measure their position, and hence address their strengths and weaknesses to ensure that the objective of making all schools smart is achieved as targeted. With this and the tireless efforts by the smart school team of MDeC in collaboration with the various departments of the MOE, the smart school idea is all set to scale greater heights in the evolution of education. Be patient...and behold the newer and bolder image of the 88 smart schools which is now taking shape and will be unveiled in the very near future.
